Lauren & Joe Gardenbelle

Our founders, Lauren and Joe Gardenbelle, lived and traveled in their school bus conversion for over 5 years. Lauren, a former highschool art teacher, and Joe, a sous chef both resigned from their careers in 2020 and set off on their first voyage in their school bus. 2 months into their travels, they began selling vintage and thrifted clothing that they sourced on the road, from all over the country. At that time, their Instagram shop had less than 75 followers and it was named Gardenbelle’s Traveling Closet. 3 months later, after abundant research and exploration on sustainable and ethical clothing production, they launched their first collection of hand-made creations of their own brand, changing the shop name to Gardenbelle Shop.

Fast forward to the present day, Lauren and Joe are proud to be expanding their shop to include certified organic cotton, hemp, wood-pulp fiber from trees rejected by the furniture industry, and other hand-sourced vintage and upcycled fabrics from their travels to India. DYES + TAGS

In 2024, we sent our dyes off for the EPA Method 3052 : 1996 ISO Test, and passed. Our dyes are Heavy Metal and Azo Free. We use certified low-impact dyes for all of our fabrics to ensure not only safe and environmentally-friendly garments, but safe working conditions as well.

Our clothing tags are plastic-free and are made with 100% recycled paper, cotton cord and a reusable metal pin. 

We’re dedicated to expanding our use of innovative, sustainable fabrics and materials as we continue on our journey toward mindfully made garments in organic natural fibers.

1. Ethical Labor Practices

We're committed to ensuring that everyone involved in bringing our designs to life is treated with respect and fairness. While we haven't applied for official certification, we adhere to Fair Trade certification standards in our labor practices. To ensure these standards are upheld, we conduct unannounced audits of our sew houses in India, fostering and maintaining a close-knit relationship with our partners.

2. Supporting Communities

We carry a range of designs that directly support artisans, such as our hair wraps, Ericeira Shell Top, Ethereal Macrame dress, as well as our entire collection of intricately hand tie dyed garments. We also honor traditional practices by incorporating block printed organic cotton, where blocks are meticulously hand carved and fabrics are hand-printed, supporting local livelihoods.

3. Fair Wages for Our Team

For our USA-based warehouse team, our team members start at $22 an hour, reflecting our commitment to fair compensation and supporting a thriving workforce.

For our India-based sewing team, we take a unique approach: they dictate their own wages based on the skill level required for each garment and the time it takes to create. This ensures that artisans are fairly compensated for their expertise and effort.

CORPORATE EDEN REFORESTATION PARTNER

For 2025, we are proud to be a corporate partner with Eden: People+Planet, donating to reforestation efforts for every transaction made on our website. 

CERTIFIED COMPOSTABLE PACKAGING

We have transitioned to using mailers that are 100% compostable-certified. We made this change in order to provide eco-friendly + biodegradable packaging options that are accessible to households without recycling capabilities. Our mailers meet the Australian standards (AS5810 and AS4736) administered by the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA). We are also working to ensure alignment with U.S. certifications, including:

  • ASTM D6400: This U.S. standard certifies compostable plastics designed to biodegrade safely during typical composting cycles.
  • BPI Certification: Administered by the Biodegradable Products Institute, this certification verifies compostability in industrial composting facilities without leaving harmful residues.

UTILIZING WASTE MATERIALS

We prioritize zero-waste principles by incorporating fabric scraps and production waste into our designs. This includes all of our bralette styles, scrunchies, upcoming kids’ clothing, and zero-waste pennant flags.
